Easter Week in Sicily

In the days leading up to Easter, in every Sicilian town, processions are carried out bringing to life the Passion of Christ. The Christian component goes side by side with the pagan element, resulting in the creation of unique rituals which are completely different from all the others taking place in the rest of Italy. I followed the processions in the villages on the Eastern part of the island, in the little towns with very few inhabitants and where there is a greater intimacy and a strongly felt sense of the religious tradition than in the larger, more well-known processions.

Beyond the processions, I have tried during this short stay to discover the essence of Sicily, shoot some aspects of daily Sicilian life and capture the spirit of this wonderful region.

Siracusa is one of the oldest city of Europe. You find there the mix of what makes Italy unique...combination of traditions, importance of family, fashion and appearance, culture and history and .... a piaggio scooter like in a movie from Fellini.

Fishermen in the opened market of Siracusa.

In Sicily, you find a lot a strong excessive personlalities....fishermen on the market sometimes behaves more like comedians...
